Monday 28 July - Saturday 09 August 2003
Week One
The holiday began on a sunny Monday at the end of July. Mark cleaned the van and Dave packed.
Their first destination was Weymouth to drop of Dave's chili pepper plants with Mark's Grandma.
The following day's leg took them through the mist and rain to Widecombe in the heart of Dartmoor.
Dave is reading some Sherlock Holmes at the moment and he could see why the Hounds of the
Baskervilles was set here! The dense drizzle didn't stop but that didn't stop the lads taking
a walk and then warming up witha cup of tea and a game of scrabble.
The first week was spent around Watergate Bay and Newquay. Dave took a surfing lesson and hired
a board another day. Dave and Mak's best intentions were foiled when one of the bikes broke a short
way from their campsite and had to be rescued by the Fun BusThe highlight of the first week was
the RipCurl Boardmasters at Fistral Beach in Newquay. The weather was perfect and the beach crowded
with tourists and locals admiring the skills of world class surfers in competition.
On Sunday the Fun Bus set off for the short run down towards Lands End. On route they stopped in
Marazion for the day where they waded out to St Michael's Mount. The day ended with the run out
to Sennen Cove and the Trevedra Farm campsite. It was a nice site in a beautiful location but because of
the time of year it was very full.
Week Two
The second week began in a relaxed and leisurely style in Sennen Cove. Dave and Mark hung about
the campsite and regularly took the picturesque walk through the corn fields to the beach. One
evening they took cool bottle of wine to watch the sun set over the sea. After a couple of days
doing nothing much, they went for a walk to Land's End and the next day took a trip around the
coast to the precipitous Minack Theatre at Portcurno.
The time had come for the lads to head home. On route they stopped at the lovely Highgate House
site in the hills outside Bude but all too soon they back in the urban sprawl of London. Dave and
Mark unpacked the van in the late afternoon sun and thought back with a smile to their two weeks
of touring. One day, they thought, we'll set out in the Fun Bus and not turn back. One day.
